Man and Technic

Mitzi Cunliffe’s sculpture ‘Man and Technic’ (1957) was originally commissioned for West Wythenshawe Technical High School, later renamed Brookway High School; the sculpture remains on the Moor Road site, now occupied by Manchester Health Academy .

The Academy very kindly allowed me to photograph ‘Man and Technic’ in order to create a 3D model for digital display and 3D printing. The model might also be adapted into an award/trophy design for the school’s use.

SLA print created using FormLabs. Model hollowed out using Meshmixer before printing.

Around 600 photographs were taken, originally using a Canon S100 on Auto, but later using a GoPro on a stick, due to the statue’s height requiring elevated views. A tree shelters the statue from harsh sunlight and obscures the sun in the early afternoon, meaning that my photographs worked well for photogrammetry even though conditions were bright and sunny.

RealityCapture software had no problem combining the different sets of photographs into a coherent mesh. The mesh was edited in Zbrush and then uploaded to Sketchfab, where it made the Cultural Heritage and History Top 10 for 2020 wk 33!
